Jared Hemley had a mission. He was home from school due to Covid-19 and was bored. Brandon systems was disposing old high end servers not needed as the company transitioned computing to the cloud.
He saw a legacy very high powered data center server in a garbage pile. To the team at Brandon this was garbage, to Jared it was an opportunity to help the fight against Covad-19 (F@H) is a distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics. Jared reconfigured the server, added new memory, software etc and placed the server in operation connected to F@H).
He noted – “The server operates at 80% utilization and notes if you have spare data center computing power – lend it to F@H.
